VISION

An international centre of excellence in research, training and practice in tropical and infectious diseases

MISSION

To influence public health policy, improve the standards of healthcare and be at the centre of control and eradication of tropical and infectious diseases through research, training and practice

CORE MANDATE

In line with the institute’s mission; namely: “To influence Public Health Policy, Improve the Standards of Healthcare and be at the centre of Control and Eradication of Tropical and Infectious diseases through Research, Training andPractice”, we take pride in the following core mandates:

  1. Creating, Storing and Disseminating knowledge related to Infectious Diseases, Non-infectious diseases, drug-resistant infections, Neglected Tropical Diseases and Zoonosis through research, teaching and supporting various policy formulations.
  2. Develop, initiate and maintain relevant training programs in tropical and infectious diseases at post basic and graduate levels (MSc and PhD).
  3. Participate in disease surveillance, outbreaks and research in zoonosis and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in Kenya and the Eastern and Central African region at large.
  4. Serve as a reference diagnostic centre in the region for emerging pathogens (RVF, Marburg, Ebola, HIV and Tuberculosis) and Bio-terrorism.
  5. In partnership with the government of Kenya, take active and leading role in the prevention and management of tropical and infectious diseases.
  6. Support capacity building for translating research into clinical practice and policy formulations.
  7. Establish strategic and mutually beneficial links and partnerships with other research/training institutions both locally and internationally.
  8. In partnership with collaborators conduct cutting edge research that translates into innovations and patents.
  9. Contribution towards our university’s efforts in Globalization of university education through establishment and management of vibrant collaborations both locally and internationally.

UNITID OBJECTIVES

  1. Serve as a reference training, surveillance and diagnostic centre in the region for emerging pathogens (RVF, Marburg, Ebola), zoonosis; NTDs and Bio-Terrorism
  2. Establish strategic and mutually beneficial partnerships with other research institutions both locally and internationally
  3. Conduct cutting edge research that translates into innovations and patents
  4. Develop competitive research proposals and seek for funding from donor agencies
  5. Support capacity building for translating research into clinical practice and policy formulations
  6. Establish models for management, prevention, and control of tropical and infectious diseases
