Mr Ernest Lutomia, visited the Public agency of Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) on 22nd -26th September 2014.NML is housed in the Canadian Science centre for human and animal health at 1015 Arlington Street in Winnipeg Mannitoba, Canada.

The long term purpose of this Visit was to receive training inorder to establish Ebola diagnostic Laboratory at UNITID, Kenya, Nairobi.

The National Microbiology Laboratory (NML), Canada is responsible for the identification, control and prevention of infectious diseases.

The University of Nairobi, UNITID laboratory is set to be assessed by the EAC REGIONAL assesors for possible inclusion into EAC Regional Network of Reference Medical Diagnostic and Research Laboratories in East Africa.

This was confirmed by Dr. Stanley SONOIYA - EAC Health. However the East African Community Official letter and logistical details of the assessment will follow soon in liaison with EAC Countries.

UNITID recently started screening for the Philadelphia chromosome by use of XPERT BCR-ABL on 22nd September 2014.

The Xpert BCR-ABL Monitor Assay is a real-time RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain (Reaction) assay intended as an aid in the monitoring of the BCR-ABL mRNA transcript in peripheral blood of patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).
